Brand Shoot: Sparkling Soul Yoga | Capturing Soul, Not Just Smiles

Let's talk about "branding." It’s one of those words that gets thrown around so much it’s basically lost all meaning, like "artisanal" or "synergy." It usually conjures up images of soulless corporate headshots where everyone has the same stiff smile, looking like they've been forced to watch a PowerPoint presentation on quarterly earnings for three hours straight.

So, when Kym from Sparkling Soul Yoga got in touch, she needed photos for her business. But the last thing she wanted, and the last thing I wanted to shoot, was another set of sterile, lifeless pictures. She needed photos that captured the feeling of her yoga practice: calm, joyful, and deeply authentic.

Basically, she needed to bottle the lightning of her personality. A fun challenge before my second coffee of the day.

The Difference Between a Photo and a Story

Anyone with a fancy camera can take a technically "good" photo. Decent light, sharp focus, subject is somewhere in the frame. Job done. But brand photography isn't about that. It's about telling a story. It's the difference between a cup of instant coffee and a perfectly pulled espresso shot, they're both technically coffee, but only one has character, depth, and makes you actually feel something.

My job is to find the story behind the business. It’s about creating images that make someone stop scrolling and say, "Okay, I get it. I get her."

A successful brand photoshoot captures the soul of the business, not just the face of the person running it. It’s a visual translation of passion, expertise, and personality, turning a service into a human connection. It answers the question, "Who is this person and why should I trust them?" before a single word is read.

The Game Plan: A Photoshoot on the Brisbane River

To capture the essence of Sparkling Soul Yoga, we needed a plan. A proper brand shoot isn't just about showing up and hoping for the best. It’s a collaboration.

Location, Location, Location (Obviously)

We decided to shoot down by the Brisbane River. Why? Because a sterile studio wasn't going to cut it. Kym’s practice is about connecting with yourself and the world around you. We needed that blend of nature (the park and water) and the quiet energy of the city in the background. It tells a story of finding peace in a busy world, which is pretty much the definition of yoga, isn't it? Also, and most importantly, it is the exact location where she holds her yoga practices.

Chasing That Moody Brisbane Light

Ah, the light. The most important ingredient. We were blessed with one of those classic moody Brisbane skies, which is frankly more interesting than a boring blue canvas. It gave us this gorgeous, soft light for her portraits, and with a bit of flash magic we created the essence of a beautiful sunset.

And then, as the sun went down, we got to play with silhouettes. There's something incredibly powerful about a silhouette. It’s not about the person's face; it's about their form, their energy, their strength. It turns a yoga pose into a piece of art.

"Posing" is a Four-Letter Word

I have a deep-seated aversion to forced poses. "Okay, now laugh!" is the fastest way to get a pained grimace. My approach is simple: we talk, we walk, we have a laugh, and I take photos in between.

The best shots of Kym, the ones where her spirit really shines through, are the ones where she’s genuinely laughing or lost in a moment of quiet reflection. My job isn't to pose a person; it's to create an environment where their real personality can show up. The rest is just clicking a button.

The Final Cut

In the end, we created a whole library of images for Kym to use, warm and welcoming headshots, powerful yoga poses, and candid moments that show the real person behind Sparkling Soul Yoga. Now, when you land on her website or social media, you're not just seeing a yoga instructor. You're meeting Kym.

And that, right there, is branding that doesn't make you want to die of boredom.

So, here's my question for you, especially if you run your own business: what do your current photos say about you? Do they tell the real story?
